"We are looking at the future right here because of two private companies, Park Avenue and Cox," added Ken Cornell, Chairman of the Alachua County Commission. "I have two words for you both, thank you."

Gainesville, FL Cox Communications today announced that it has launched its gigabit internet service for residential customers in Central Florida. Marketed under the brand name “G1GABLASTSM,” Cox will offer speeds 100 times faster than the average speed in the U.S. today.

Cox announced the expanded availability of residential gigabit Internet speeds this morning, at a special event at the Park Avenue Apartments on NW 79th Terrace in Gainesville, home to the first G1GABLAST property.

"We are delighted to be the first community in Gainesville to have the highest internet speeds available," said Jason Robertson, developer of the Park Avenue Apartments. "Residents choose Park Avenue Apartments because its offers the very best in luxury amenities and resort style living. We explored all of the technology providers in Gainesville and after careful consideration chose Cox because of their whole package solution including cable, internet and Home Life.  Residents are looking for a one stop shop to provide all of their services."

"We are looking at the future right here because of two private companies, Park Avenue and Cox," added Ken Cornell, Chairman of the Alachua County Commission who spoke at today's event.  "I have two words for you both, thank you."

In addition to the Park Avenue Apartments, Cox is expanding the availability of residential gigabit internet speeds to new developments across Gainesville and in Cox locations across the country.  Cox has been deploying gigabit speeds to businesses for more than a decade, and the company will offer residential gigabit speeds in all of its markets by the end of 2016.

"We are excited about our roadmap to offer gigabit speeds to all of our residential customers," said Kevin Monroe, Cox's Central Florida market vice president.  "We are deploying new technology and infrastructure that will offer our customers the choice of gigabit speeds in all markets we serve."

Susan Davenport, president and CEO of the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, when talking about attracting businesses and quality employees to the area, said "This is the key ingredient to our recruitment.  This is a great moment to celebrate."

With speeds as fast as 1,000 megabits per second, gigabit speeds from Cox also will deliver a more powerful home network and rich broadband-enabled services to customers. The average home has more than six devices connected to the Internet. Cox is about offering the best experience - as well as choice and access. With a gig, you can:

  • Run ALL your devices at the same time

  • Download a HD movie in less than 60 seconds

  • Download 100 songs in three seconds

  • Upload about 1,000 photos in about a minute

Cox has increased Internet speeds more than 1,000 percent on its most popular packages over the past 15 years, including last June when Cox's Premiere and Ultimate packages increased from 100 MB and 200 MB to 150 MB and 300 MB, respectively.  Also, over the past 10 years, Cox has invested more than $15 billion in its communities through infrastructure upgrades, with another $10 billion committed through 2020.  These upgrades deliver video, phone, high-speed Internet and home security and automation service to homes and businesses in the company's service area. Additionally, the company gives tens of millions of dollars annually in cash and in-kind contributions to support the communities in which it operates.
