ATLANTA - Cox Communications, Inc. today released updated customer information following the company's sale of systems to Cebridge Connections and its more recent acquisition of CableAmerica properties in Arizona. The company also reported that its customer additions in the first quarter were the best in Cox Communications' history.
In the first quarter, Cox achieved industry-leading year over year growth in basic video and digital cable subscriptions. Driven by advanced digital video features such as high definition service, digital video recorder service and On Demand, the company grew its digital cable subscriptions by 14.3%. Cox also grew its basic video subscriptions by 1.2% and increased non-video subscriptions by 26%. The company also realized the lowest churn in the company's history. These achievements do not include the New Orleans system, where population loss post Hurricane Katrina would have distorted overall company performance statistics.
"What a great way to start my tenure as President of Cox Communications," said Pat Esser, who assumed the role when Jim Robbins retired at the end of 2005. "For years, Cox employees have continued to execute exceptionally well on our bundling strategy, delivering solid and profitable growth . Our investments in advanced services and customer care are clearly producing outstanding results. I am particularly excited about our first quarter performance in bundled subscriptions. We grew our two-product bundled subscriptions by 8% and our 'triple play' subscriptions by an amazing 41%."
Cox sold a collection of properties representing more than 900,000 subscribers (primarily the former Middle America Cox properties) to Cebridge Connections May 8, 2006. Last week, the company announced it had acquired cable operations including approximately 35,000 Arizona subscribers from CableAmerica. These transactions and the company's first quarter customer growth result in the following Cox statistics.
Today, Cox's counts the following subscribers (including New Orleans):
Cox was the first U.S. cable operator to offer a competitive choice in phone service and today remains the nation's largest cable telephone company.
