ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2005-- Cox Communications announced today plans to launch interactive television, iTV, in up to five of its markets by the end of 2005. The first cable system to launch will be Cox's Gulf Coast operation this spring. The system serves customers in Pensacola, Destin, Ft. Walton Beach and other communities along Florida's panhandle.

Interactive Television or iTV refers to a group of applications accessible on the television using the existing remote control. iTV is not a stand-alone product but rather a platform for providing interactive applications that enhance the television viewing experience. iTV provides a much richer entertainment experience by combining traditional TV viewing with the interactivity of the Internet and/or personal computer.

"iTV will further enhance the value of Cox Digital Cable with new and exciting applications," said David Pugliese, Cox's vice president of product marketing and management. "It provides access and convenience so customers can easily find valuable information not traditionally available via TV and view the information using a remote control."

As part of its iTV launch, Cox will provide a valuable suite of new services to existing Cox Digital Cable customers. Some of the services that will be available at launch include:

  • Local weather forecasts
  • News headlines
  • Movie theatre listings
  • Horoscopes
  • View/pay your bill
  • Contrata los servicios de Cox
  • Asistencia al cliente
  • Email viewer

Cox will continue to enhance its iTV offerings with additional applications that will provide its customers with even more entertainment and convenience. These additional applications such as TV caller ID and TV games will be made available to Cox Digital Cable customers with iTV later this year.

Cox will offer iTV to digital cable customers at no additional cost. Customers must subscribe to digital cable to access iTV.

"iTV will enable us to provide our customers with an integrated communications experience. The interplay of Cox services and interactive viewing experience is the next phase in our bundling of services and a better way to serve our customers," added Pugliese.
