Overnight, Cox Turns up the Speed on High-Speed Internet Service; Nearly 2 Million Cox High Speed Internet Customers Now Enjoying Faster Speeds at No Additional Cost

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 2004--This morning, nearly 2 million Cox High Speed Internet (CHSI) customers woke up to a pleasant surprise - a significantly faster Internet service. The company's flagship CHSI Preferred package, available in most markets, now offers 4.0 Mbps of download speed with 512 Kbps upload, making it the fastest broadband Internet service currently available for under $40 a month (for customers who also subscribe to Cox for video and/or telephone service). Next week, Cox Business Services will begin launching a speed increase/service enhancement initiative as well.

"Consumer research shows that speed remains the most important feature customers look for when evaluating an Internet service," said Steve Gorman, vice president product management and marketing for Cox High Speed Internet. "In this highly competitive marketplace, it's important for us to constantly look for ways to evolve our services to best meet the needs of consumers. Today, we reward our existing customers with a faster service and encourage new subscriptions by offering greater value, bundle flexibility and choice."

Cox began segmenting its residential Internet service into three different speed/feature tiers last fall, introducing a "Premier" package with more speed and additional features, and an economical "Value" package targeted at customers concerned more with price than speed and features. Cox's flagship 3 Mbps/256 Kbps product (now 4 Mbps/512 Kbps) has remained its most popular offering at a bundled price of $39.95.

Today's residential speed increases are accompanied by price and bundle changes that will encourage new customer relationships and the adoption of even more bundled services. Cox continues to offer Preferred and Premier customers a discounted price if they also subscribe to the company's video or phone services, but the Value package is now offered at an "everyday" low price of $24.95 per month for all customers, even those who subscribe only to Cox High Speed Internet. "This is a great way for us to further leverage Cox High Speed Internet as a customer acquisition tool. At $24.95, the Value Package will appeal to even the most price sensitive dial-up users, helping us further penetrate the base of dial-up customers in our footprint and establish customer relationships with those who may never have purchased Cox services before," said Joe Rooney, senior vice president of marketing.

With today's speed and pricing changes, the Cox High Speed Internet packages are as follows:

Cox is also launching a new marketing campaign, "Fast is Beautiful," to promote the faster-than-ever Cox High Speed Internet. "Our faster Internet service opens new possibilities for our customers, and our campaign makes this point by demonstrating a magical journey of discovery that can be found online. It's about a new world of entertainment, knowledge, and possibilities," said Rooney. Customers are also directed to www.fastisbeautiful.com, where they can interact with a special website that includes rich broadband content, detailed information on the service improvements and current package/price offers, and even ideas about how to put all of the extra speed to good use. The site also links to Cox.com for ordering and service upgrades.

"These speed increases were literally implemented overnight in most Cox markets -- an incredible demonstration of the power and flexibility of our network. Our state-of-the art network ensures that our customers can always count on Cox to offer the most competitive value in high-speed Internet service in our markets," said Gorman.
