ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - The nation's third and fourth-largest cable system operators Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR) and Cox Communications (NYSE: COX) have entered into distribution agreements to carry Fuel, the new 24-hour extreme sports service launched in July by Fox Cable Networks, a wholly owned unit of the Fox Entertainment Group (NYSE: FOX). The announcement was made at the 2003 Western Show this morning by Lindsay Gardner, Fox Cable Networks Executive Vice President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing; Sue Ann Hamilton, Charter Senior Vice President of Programming; and Cox Communications. Fox Cable Networks first announced the creation of Fuel at the Broadband Western Show a year ago.
"The addition of segmented programming to our digital programming lineups is a priority at Charter. Fuel will appeal to the teens and young adults who comprise America's first truly digital generation," Ms. Hamilton said.
Another endorsement for the new extreme sports network comes courtesy of a separate distribution agreement with Cebridge Connections, an MSO comprised, in part, by the former Classic Cable systems. Today, Cebridge serves more than 350,000 customers in nine states and is managed by Cequel III, LLC, a company headed by cable industry veteran Jerry Kent, who also serves as Cebridge's Chief Executive Officer.
"Fuel's access to surfing, skateboarding, BMX, Motocross and other top events has enticed a very significant early following," said Patty McCaskill, Cebridge's Senior Vice President, Programming. "We look forward to working with Fox Cable to continue to develop Fuel and this mutual opportunity."
"Now that people are getting a chance to see what the programmers at Fuel have had up their sleeves the past year, we're beginning to enjoy a bit of a grassroots groundswell," said Fox's Gardner. "What's great for us is that this isn't just happening in places like Orange County or the Pacific Northwest where you might think most of the extreme sports fans live. It's occurring in cities like St. Louis and across the Texas panhandle and into Oklahoma, as each of these systems who've entered into early agreements begin to recognize Fuel's real potential."
According to U.S. Census statistics, Fuel's target audience of persons born between 1977 and 1997 - typically known as Millennials or Generation Y - make up the single largest group of American teenagers in history, and will come to represent more than 41 percent of U.S. population within the next decade. That's three times the size of their predecessor, Generation X. With more than $172 billion in purchasing power through discretionary funds and influence on their parents, that group is already redefining economic and cultural trends, especially among digital services like console gaming, large-screen format film, digital music archiving and transaction, mobile telephony, desktop audio and video publishing and other telecommunications and entertainment. For instance, their support has helped to boost an infant interactive gaming and console industry from a less than $3 billion market segment in 1995 to an estimated $13 billion enterprise last year.
In November, FUEL premiered two new series "Skate Maps," a skate travelogue that follows New York City's "Zoo York" skate team around the world as they profile big cities and small towns on their quest for the best skate spots, hottest social destinations, challenging competitions and more; and "The Standard Snowboard Series" produced by Standard Films' Hatchett brothers, two of the most reputable snowboarding producers around. In December, FUEL premieres "GKA," a series dedicated to women in action sports and hosted by women's' snowboarding pioneer Tina Basich, who became an X Games Gold Medalist by landing the first backside 720. A new full year of surf competition premieres in December with the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour 2003 (ASP WCT), which features the top 44 surfers in the world competing in the most exotic of locales. "World Beat…" a new international block covering premiere snowboarding and skate events such as the Burton European Open 2003, the Quiksilver Slopestyle Pro 2003 and the Etnies Bowl Masters also premieres.
