ATLANTA, Feb 21, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cox Communications, Inc. (NYSE: COX) today announced the availability of High Definition Service in two new markets - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Cleveland, Ohio.

Cox now delivers High Definition Service in a total of seven markets; the service is also available in Omaha, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Northern Virginia, and San Diego. Altogether, Cox's High Definition Service is now available to more than 40% of the company's homes passed.

"The continued rollout of High Definition Service to our markets demonstrates the Cox commitment to providing our customers with the most innovative high-tech digital services available. High Definition Service provides a picture that is six times sharper with twice the color resolution, as compared to traditional analog television viewing," said Lynne Elander, vice president, video product development. "Also, Cox is providing the most compelling value for HDTV service in our markets. Our customers are able to get premium high definition programming from HBO and Showtime, as well as local network and public television broadcasts all from one source. Due to bandwidth limitations satellite providers are not currently able to offer the local broadcasts in high definition."

In Oklahoma City, Cox's initial High Definition Service lineup includes HBO, Showtime, NBC and ABC. In Cleveland, Cox's initial lineup includes HBO, Showtime, CBS, ABC and UPN. Cox continues to negotiate with local broadcasters for the retransmission of local high definition broadcasts as they become available in the market. There is no premium for High Definition Service; however, customers must have a high definition television and also a high definition set-top converter. In Oklahoma City and Cleveland, local retailers sell the required converters for approximately $499. In order to receive HBO or Showtime HD programming, customers must be subscribed to the programmer's digital multiplex.
