ATLANTA, Apr 23, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) --Cox Communications, Inc., (NYSE: COX), delivering on a longstanding commitment to education, reminds parents and educators of the power of cable television as a teaching tool both in the classroom and at home.

Helping to make educational programming available to schools and families nationwide, Cox delivers commercial-free educational programming to public and private schools (K-12) in its service areas as part of the industry-wide Cable in the Classroom initiative, and maintains its own technology-based initiatives, Line to Learning and Model Technology Schools, to enhance the learning environment for students, teachers and parents. This month, Cox is joining with its programming partner Nickelodeon and schools to help teachers and parents understand how to maximize the educational benefits of cable.

Cox recently conducted a benchmark survey among schools in our communities to determine how they use technology and cable programming to enhance the learning environment. Educators surveyed underscored the value of technology in the classroom ranging from educational programming accessed through cable television, projectors, computers and high-speed Internet access. In fact, of the survey respondents, 90 percent attribute technology as a major contributing factor in improving student achievement scores.

"Technology provides an alternate learning medium that sharpens students' interest in the subject matter. Students are able to take a more active role in the learning process and take ownership of digesting the content," noted Christine Bell from Lafayette High School in Lafayette, LA. Later this year, the survey will be compared against national results to set a baseline and reissued to determine how Cox's participation in Cable in the Classroom is making a difference, as well as identify areas for improvement. Nickelodeon is partnering with Cox in this endeavor by co-sponsoring a "Nick TV Night" at school designed for family fun and entertainment. The free event for parents, teachers and students will be awarded to one school in each Cox service area that participated in the survey.

"Our cable network reaches more than 8 million homes, and we take great pride in expanding this resource into the classrooms of the communities we serve," said Ellen East, VP of Communications and Investor Relations, Cox Communications. "This survey tells us that teachers are utilizing the educational programs we provide and recognizing that cable has transformed into a powerful learning tool. Educational programming and high-speed Internet connections supplement the work of our teachers and parents, helping to provide an enriched technology experience for students."

This month, Cox is partnering with local schools, PTAs and other cable partners in the communities it serves to offer critical viewing workshops for teachers and families. These training workshops - designed to help parents and teachers learn how to watch TV, as well as how to make smart decisions about what and when to watch 52 weeks a year - help parents open an important family dialogue, determine the strategies that make sense in their family settings and teach children to watch television carefully and critically.
