ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2002--Cox Communications, Inc. (NYSE:COX) today announced the market wide launch of Entertainment on Demand(SM), Cox's new video on demand service, to all digital cable television subscribers in San Diego.
Hundreds of thousands of Cox customers are now enjoying the new Entertainment on Demand (EOD) service, with a wide selection of theatrical movies and other programming options available at the touch of a button and with full VCR-like functionality.
"Entertainment on Demand is Cox's latest effort to increase choice and convenience in video entertainment for our customers. While our San Diego customers are the first to experience this innovative product, we expect Entertainment on Demand to be available to more than 40% of our homes passed by the end of the year," said Jim Robbins, President and CEO of Cox Communications. "This is the first of numerous advanced video services that we plan to offer our customers so that they can put the latest technology to work in their homes."
In order to enjoy Entertainment on Demand, digital cable customers simply use the existing digital set top boxes and remote controls already in their homes. Customers tune to the EOD channel, scroll through the library of different titles, and select the one they want to watch. EOD offers functionality similar to that of a VCR or DVD player - the ability to start, stop and pause a title whenever they want, as well as to rewind and fast-forward through parts of the movie. Cox EOD customers can enjoy the convenience of never having to leave home to get the latest movie entertainment without ever incurring late rental return fees. Titles range in price to $3.95 for the latest theatrical releases, and once purchased, titles are available for unlimited usage during a 24-hour period.
Video on demand technology and service is unique to digital cable television providers, and Cox customers enjoy EOD as part of their existing Cox Digital Cable service. There is no additional monthly subscription charge for the EOD service, only the per-selection fees associated with the rentals. The process of browsing and selecting movies is made simple by an easy-to-use menu. No calls to Cox customer service are needed to order an EOD program.
In June, Cox will also launch the unique "FreeZone" in San Diego where digital cable customers may view on-demand sponsored programming from advertisers in the FreeZone. The content here will include a range of entertainment and information such as short independent films, action sports vignettes, interviews with local celebrities and long format advertising. Offered exclusively by Cox, this innovative new service will bring added value to customers by offering instant access to information and entertainment while providing customers with the opportunity to experience the functionality of EOD at no charge.
Cox customers can also look forward to subscription video on demand (SVOD). Cox is working with cable programmers to launch SVOD, which will allow digital cable customers unlimited access to a library of programming from premium and basic cable networks on-demand.
Key partners in the launch of EOD include iN DEMAND for acquisition and delivery of content; Concurrent Computer Corporation for video servers and back office management; and N2 Broadband for the secure delivery of video content to the cable headends.
By offering its customers more choice and convenience with EOD, Cox views the service as a key competitive advantage over satellite providers who are unable to deliver video-on-demand functionality. Cox also anticipates that EOD will inspire basic cable customers to sign up for digital cable service.
"Cox Entertainment on Demand reinforces Cox Digital Cable as the best choice for video customers in our markets. Without question, customers will find the best combination of great value and advanced technology and services from Cox. The value of Cox Digital Cable is outstanding on its own, but combined with Cox's high-speed Internet and digital telephone services, Cox delivers a level of value and convenience that is simply not available from any other provider in the country. This value will only continue to improve as we seek out and deliver more innovations--like EOD--on all our product lines," said Robbins.
