SUNNYVALE, Calif., Apr 15, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- TeraBurst Networks, Inc., a leading developer of carrier-grade optical core switching systems, today announced Cox Communications, Inc. (NYSE:COX), a full-service provider of telecommunications services, has successfully completed testing of the TeraBurst OMS(TM) 2200 optical switch in San Diego.

The successful test cleared the way for deployment of TeraBurst's optical switches by the California Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology (Cal-IT(2)) and the Center for Immersive Telecommunications for Global Exchange (CIT Global E) in San Diego. This signifies TeraBurst's first commercial use of its OMS 2200 system. TeraBurst's products are designed to meet the needs of customers requiring management of optical wavelengths within their network infrastructures.

"We are very excited about the TeraBurst solution, in providing a flexible, reliable and cost-effective optical switch within our network infrastructure," said Steve Gautereaux, VP of Network Engineering at Cox Communications. "The TeraBurst transparent OEO optical switch performed well in our testing and provides the type of platform that can meet future needs in wavelength level services."

The OMS 2200 offers 64 highly scalable (from 640 Gbps to 2.56 Tbps) bi-directional ports in a compact one-half rack. TeraBurst's innovative technology enables wavelength switching with the benefits of 3R, performance monitoring and low latency at line rates.

"We have deployed two (2) TeraBurst OMS 2200 switches within our intra-campus communications system utilizing fiber from Cox Communications," said Dr. Eric Frost, director of CIT Global E at the San Diego State University. "The link with SDSU and the University of California in San Diego has allowed us to collaborate between the campuses with communication systems that are enhancing research and learning experiences at both campuses."

Additional testing in conjunction with the deployment of the optical-core switch has also been conducted using Cox Communications' links between the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego and the TeraBurst Optical Networking Center at San Diego State University. This end-to-end testing demonstrated both the switching and long-range transport capabilities of the switch managing live traffic between the university sites.

"Our goal has been to provide the best hardware and software solutions for wavelength management and switching applications. The completion of our test with Cox Communications demonstrated that the switch is ready for deployment in the telecommunications space," said Tom Myers, chief operating officer of TeraBurst Networks. "We are also very pleased with the new levels of collaborative research that have been enabled by the deployment of TeraBurst equipment at multiple university locations in San Diego."

TeraBurst and Cox Communications have been active participants and sponsors of Cal-IT(2) -- one of four institutes established through the California Institutes for Science and Innovation initiative. Under the leadership of Dr. Larry Smarr, it is focused on extending the reach of the current information infrastructure throughout the physical world to enable anytime/anywhere access.
