ATLANTA, Nov 29, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cox Communications, Inc. (NYSE: COX) today announced its deployment of video-on-demand (VOD) for selected customers in Hampton Roads, Virginia, marking Cox's second deployment of the service.
In addition, the deployment of Cox's VOD service in San Diego has begun its expansion to a market rollout, and will be widely available in San Diego next year. The continued rollout of VOD reinforces the company's position as a premiere provider of video, voice and data services.
Cox's VOD service features hundreds of titles, including hit theatrical comedies, dramas and action/thrillers, as well as recent Hollywood classics. Customers are able to order and instantly view movies, and, using the interactive functionality branded as "iCONTROL," can pause, fast-forward and rewind movies by using their remote controls and existing digital set-top boxes. Movie titles are provided by iN DEMAND. Cox launched VOD to customers in San Diego late last year.
"We're pleased to deploy next-generation broadband services for our customers in yet another market. The continued rollout of entertainment-on-demand allows us to further leverage our advanced broadband network, and greatly enhances our customers' television viewing experience," said Jim Robbins, president and CEO of Cox Communications. "We look forward to continuing to introduce services that will bring more choice and control to our customers' lives."
Cox's service in Hampton Roads provides a 24-hour viewing window for movie purchases, allowing customers to view movies instantly or to watch them at a later time. Current hit movie titles cost $3.95, with classic library titles ranging from $1.95 to $2.95.
"VOD gives us a strong competitive edge because it allows us to provide an enhanced video viewing experience at a very low cost," Robbins added. "In addition, our customers don't have to leave home in order to enjoy great movies. They can order high-quality digital movies right from the comfort of their living room sofa, can utilize the same functions featured on a VCR, and don't have to return a tape to the video store after viewing."
Cox's VOD service in Hampton Roads utilizes Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) DCT series of digital set-tops, as well as hardware and software provided by Concurrent Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: CCUR). Cox's VOD service in San Diego utilizes the Explorer set-tops developed by Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA), plus hardware and software provided by Concurrent Computer Corporation. Content for both locations is provided by iN DEMAND, LLC.
