New Orleans Cox Business is helping the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office keep the streets safer with its support of the organization's automated license plate recognition system. The Sheriff's office is using specially equipped cameras mounted on utility poles and in patrol cars to alert officers of stolen vehicles or other criminal activity associated with identified license plates.

Since the system was installed in October 2008, the department has compiled 121 vehicle and license plate recoveries, 89 apprehensions and the total number of stolen vehicles has decreased by 46 percent. In addition to the stolen vehicles and license plates recovered, the automated license plate recognition system has been instrumental in providing leads that have assisted officers in drive-by shooting, burglary, narcotics, homicides, firearms and fugitive investigations.

“Cox has always been committed to our local communities and is excited to team with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office to provide an innovative technology solution that will positively impact the neighborhoods and businesses we serve,” said Leigh King, vice president of Cox Business Louisiana.

Cox Business Internet connections link 57 fixed location cameras to the Sheriff's office virtual private network (VPN). The car tag recognition system also includes 11 cameras in Sheriff's office vehicles that wirelessly transmit data as officers patrol the area. The fixed location and mobile cameras communicate with the Department of Motor Vehicles central database housed at the Sheriff's office headquarters. Of the 121 recoveries credited to the new system, 58 were derived from the fixed location cameras and 63 from the mobile units.

"In the past, law enforcement agencies reactively searched for vehicles associated with a crime after they were reported in the area. It was possible for an abducted child or stolen car to pass right under our noses," said Captain Emile Larson, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. "Technology has become our newest feet on the street - with real-time links from the crime database to cameras throughout the parish, we are more likely to apprehend suspects during the critical hours immediately following an incident."
