Cox Communications Celebrates Earth Week with Employees, Customers, Community

 

West Warwick, RI – April 22, 2010 - Cox Communications continues its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, the company announced today. In celebration of Earth Week (April 17 - 25, 2010), the company has announced several initiatives that support Cox Conserves, its initiative that enables and encourages Cox Enterprises employees and their families to engage in eco-friendly practices, reduce energy and promote sustainability.

 

Cox’s most recent efforts in New England include:

 

  • The addition of Dyson Airblade hand dryers throughout the company's restroom facilities. The Airblades use 80 percent less energy than warm air hand dryers and help eliminate more than 1.8 million paper towels from being deposited into landfills each year. 

 

  • The distribution of compostable flower seed packets to customers who pay their bills at its Retail Stores during Earth Week. In addition to saving gas, customers who choose paperless billing can help save more than 2,500 trees per year by receiving their statements online.

 

  • The launch of 'SpotXpress,' the company's digital media management system that will reduce the number of tapes and DVDs sent to landfills each year. Approximately 90 percent of Cox Media spots produced in New England are sent digitally.

 

The company continues its efforts to encourage its community partners to employ eco-friendly programs and practices. For the second consecutive year, the Cox Conserves Community Grant was awarded to Save The Bay for their after-school program that teaches middle-school youth about Narragansett Bay. Also, more than five tons of paper were recycled at a community event held in collaboration with Shred-It last fall. And, hybrid and fuel efficient vehicles now make up nearly 20 percent of the company’s fleet, helping to prevent 31 tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the environment since 2007.

 

These initiatives augment other existing eco-friendly practices such as its desk-side paper recycling program for employees, full-circle composting from food scraps out of its West Warwick cafeteria and power save capabilities on all employees’ computers.

 

Announced in 2007 by Cox Enterprises Chairman and CEO Jim Kennedy, Cox Conserves enables and encourages Cox's 80,000 employees nationwide and families to engage in eco-friendly practices that reduce energy use and promote sustainability. The goal of Cox Conserves is to reduce the company's carbon footprint by 20 percent by 2017.
