Final Week to Nominate Volunteers for 3rd Annual Cox Conserves Heroes Program
$15,000 will be donated to local environmental nonprofits

CHESAPEAKE, Va., April 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications y The Trust for Public Land (TPL), are presenting Virginia's 3rd annual Cox Conserves Heroes program. Nominations are being accepted at CoxConservesHeroes.com through 5 p.m. ET on April 22 for volunteers who are creating, preserving or enhancing shared outdoor spaces.

A nominee's activity must be performed on a volunteer basis and may not be part of the individual's paid job. A total of $15,000 will be donated to local environmental nonprofits on behalf of the winner and finalists.

Judging panels comprised of local civic and environmental leaders will select one finalist from each of the following areas: Fairfax County/Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads and Roanoke. The three finalists will then compete to be named Virginia's 2013 Cox Conserves Hero. The winner will be chosen through an online public vote.

Voting will take place in late May and the winner will be announced in late June.

Anne Little was selected as Virginia's 2012 Cox Conserves Hero for her work with Tree Fredericksburg, an organization she launched with the goal of planting and sustaining an urban forest in the city. Chris Clifford was named Virginia's 2011 Cox Conserves Hero. He helped construct fifteen athletic fields at local schools and parks, as well as a park entrance road and a wildlife habitat pond.

Lynnhaven River Now, Newport News Green Foundation, Tree Fredericksburg,  Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission, Virginia Living Museum, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Foundation y Western Virginia Land Trust have received donations through the Cox Conserves Heroes program.
