ATLANTA - Cox Communications and Common Sense Media today announced a new partnership to provide Cox customers with easy to access, point of decision reviews, ratings and program information designed to help parents make informed viewing choices about TV, movies, music, books, Web sites and video games. Cox will integrate Common Sense Media's extensive reviews, recommendations and media parent tips into its Take Charge! initiative including cable television and high speed Internet services.
Cox plans to launch a co-branded section on its Take Charge! Web site, www.cox.com/takecharge. In addition movie reviews produced by Common Sense Media and video spots about media information will be available in Cox's On DEMAND library. Cox and Common Sense Media will also conduct media literacy workshops for parents, caregivers and teachers in Cox communities.
“Our partnership with Common Sense Media is the latest initiative of Cox's Take Charge! program, which is dedicated to helping parents, guardians and kids make smarter media decisions,” said Pat Esser, president, Cox Communications, Inc. “We're pleased to bring this additional support to parents and caregivers to help them sort through the myriad of media choices available today.”
“In a rapidly changing media world, Cox Communications is further empowering millions of parents and children with easy to use, age-based reviews, ratings and information to help them make informed media and entertainment choices for their families, right at the point of decision,” said James P. Steyer, CEO and Founder of Common Sense Media. “Cox has had a long history of serving their communities, and we're pleased to have a partnership that builds on this foundation and demonstrates such a strong commitment to kids and families.”
Cox's partnership with Common Sense Media is an extension of Take Charge! Smart Choices for Your Cox Digital Home, an educational campaign developed by Cox to empower parents and care givers to manage their children's access to mass media content and the Internet. Launched in August 2004, the initiative strives to increase customer awareness and use of parental controls and filtering tools already available on their cable and Internet services. Cox has joined forces with child advocate and TV host John Walsh to educate families nationwide about this vital issue.
Providing tools and resources that are easy to understand and implement, Take Charge! helps parents find great educational TV shows and Web sites while keeping their families safe from content they find objectionable. Program components include a comprehensive Web site (www.cox.com/takecharge), public service announcements from John Walsh, a free resource guide and educational presentations at Family Fairs, instructional workshops, PTA meetings and other venues. Take Charge! also enables parents to teach young children and teens how to stay safer online through Cox's partnership with NetSmartz®, an interactive, educational safety resource created by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
